JOURNAL CLUB 25.6.26
JOURNAL CLUB 25.6.26
The BRIDGES Journal Club was established by surgical trainees with a shared passion for education, critical appraisal, and collaborative learning. We remember how daunting surgery could feel during medical school and the foundation years — often perceived as the ‘dark arts’ reserved for a select few. Our aim is to change that perception.
Held monthly from 6–7pm, both virtually via Microsoft Teams and face-to-face at Royal Blackburn Hospital, the journal club creates an inclusive, supportive space for trainees at all levels. Sessions are led by surgical trainees, registrars, and consultants, focusing on breaking down key papers, developing critical appraisal skills, and translating evidence into clinical practice.
We emphasise:
Clear, structured discussions
Practical relevance to day-to-day surgical work
Building confidence in interpreting research
Using approachable, high-yield methods — similar to those that helped us succeed in exams and clinical practice — we aim to make surgical academia accessible, engaging, and genuinely useful.
Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with attendees valuing both the educational content and the collaborative environment.
We have also had the opportunity to present this initiative at a national conference, highlighting its impact on trainee engagement and surgical learning.
If you are a doctor currently at ELHT and would like to teach, please fill out form below. Certificate for your portfolio will be provided as evidence of teaching.
